State Representative Thad Viers said the organization will function as an awareness group to the public, who will then act as lobbyists toward state leaders.

Viers said, “At the end of the day, these people here are in the country illegally and we have to deal with them and since the Federal government’s not doing their job to enforce the laws, it’s going to be up to us.”

Viers added illegal immigration is costing South Carolinians through housing violations, medical costs, schools, and overcrowding jails.

That’s why he’s hosting the chapter’s first meeting.

Viers said the Horry Chapter will be different than other minuteman chapters, that patrol the U.S. borders and have been criticized for taking the law into their own hands.

“We obviously are not going to be doing that because we’re in South Carolina, but what we can do is get everyone involved to write their congressmen and get our U.S. senators onboard and not support amnesty and come up with a comprehensive solution to tackle this problem,” said Viers.

The meeting takes place Friday, November 9 at 6:30pm in the conference room at the Socastee Library.
